Western Sydney is fast emerging as a hub for youth film productions and screen culture. In response to the high level of interest in this area ICE is holding a Film Buff Nite at the Fairfield School of Arts on September 20 at 5.45pm.

This event will feature Brian Walls, a martial arts film critic who has travelled the world analysing action films. Discussions will be on the future directions for martial arts action films in Australia, people will get a chance to meet Australian film makers and check out local productions.

“Ever since the 70s, Australia hasn’t made any significant Kung Fu films. But we are inspired by the works of Jackie Chan and Jet Li and hope that bringing people who are interested in this genre can help us make films that speak out and represent our cultural identities”, says director of Rumble Pictures, Timothy Ly.

This event is created in response to the high level of youth film making and film interests developed in the Western Sydney community, as evident in the formulation of youth film productions such as 9Lives, Trinity Productions and Rumble Pictures.

“This project will provide a space for young people to interact, expand their understanding of “films” by providing relevant guest speakers to lead discussions and share their experience and expertise in the area. It also acts a platform for young people to express their thoughts and their experiences and stimulating intercultural creative collaboration”, says Youth Digital Cultures Project Coordinator, Maria Tran.

Managed by ICE’s Youth Digital Cultures Project, in partnership with the Foundation for Young Australians and supported by Fairfield City Council, this event aims to promote inter-cultural dialogue and discussions on a number of film genres that has impacted on youth projects.
