Lost in the Waters

Lost in the Waters: Sights, Sounds and Stories of Parramatta River is a multimedia exhibition bringing together works from 10 artists across Greater Western Sydney that explore environmental, spiritual, historical and political aspects of Parramatta River.

Lost in the Waters will be officially launched by Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Clr David Borger on Saturday 4 November, 4-5pm at Level 1, Shop 13, Brand Smart Factory Outlet, 330 Church Street, Parramatta. The exhibition will run from 4 – 17 November and features paintings, installation, video-art, sound scapes, sculpture, and performance by local artists: Marian Abboud, Zahid Ahmed, Laurren Brannigan-Onato, Peter Day, Margaret Beadle, Darryl Guy, Indira Fernandes, Sharon Lee, Abbas Makrab and Federico F. Mendoza.

Lost in the Waters is part of Riverbeats: Parramatta River Festival and is an exciting partnership between ICE, Parramatta City Council, Parramatta Holroyd Artist Network, Parramatta Artist Studios and Brand Smart Factory Outlet.

The exhibition will contain artworks that respond to Parramatta River. The Parramatta River is an important part of the Western Sydney landscape. It has played a huge role in the development of Parramatta and the surrounding areas and is home to many environmental, spiritual, historical and political issues and stories.

“Parramatta Council’s support has been very important to the success of this exhibition and to our own work. Over many years we have worked together with Council, artists and communities to develop work around the theme of Parramatta River, a significant Australian icon both environmentally and spiritually. Some of the work we have produced with Council, such as the Koori Soundscape is now a permanent fixture on the River and can be heard day and night. The mosaic in Darcy Lane, the lane leading from the Council to the Library, is another example of a river-themed work we created with Council, local artists and residents” said Lena Nahlous Director of ICE.

“This exhibition was a result of local artists from the Parramatta Holroyd Artist Network wanting to support the creation of artwork that was inspired by Parramatta River. The lack of traditional exhibition spaces was a challenge, not a deterrent. We thought, how can we showcase this art in an accessible place? And so we are excited about holding the exhibition in a non-traditional art space such as the Brand Smart shopping centre where it will be seen by many people,” said Lena.

Lost in the Waters opens on Saturday 4 November, 4pm to 5pm. Gallery hours will be Wednesday to Sunday, 11am – 4pm or by appointment.
