Voice of the Nile - one year on-air

Voice of the Nile celebrates its first year on-air anniversary this December, a major achievement for the Sudanese community radio program. Broadcasting every Sunday from 1.30-2.30pm to Sydney’s diverse and growing Sudanese community on Radio BFM 100.9 Mhz, the program has grown in audience and scope since it first hit the airwaves around this time last year.

The milestone will be marked by a celebration of performances and exhibitions, fashion parades, music and dance, as well as an Awards Ceremony for Community Achievers.

VOICE OF THE NILE DAY

Sunday 10 December
6pm-11pm
Villawood Senior Citizens Centre
Villawood Rd, Villawood

Voice of the Nile is produced by enthusiastic members of the Sudanese community, like Zyrub Ibrahim, who cut their teeth in radio with the support of ICE’s Emerging Communities Media Initiative (EMERGE). Emerge provides training, skills development and support to emerging communities in radio and multimedia, supported by a partnership with ACL (the Australian Centre for Languages).

Zyrub Ibrahim, one of the founding members and on-air hosts of Voice of the Nile is emphatic about the importance of radio and media opportunities: “Radio is one of the most important forms of communication for people from small and emerging communities,” he says. “Recently-arrived Sudanese people, for instance, have settled across a wider area in Western Sydney, and radio gives them a way of keeping in touch.”

The Emerging Communities Media Initiative takes a capacity-building approach. “Emerge aims to assist communities to establish ongoing radio programs in community radio, and to provide professional development opportunities for them to enter the media as well,” says ICE Director Lena Nahlous.

Voice of the Nile Day is sponsored by Fairfield City Council and ALCOZKABBAH Designers. For more information contact Zyrub on 0423 073 359.
