Words from the West
On Sunday May 16, Riverside Theatres Parramatta hosted Hip Hop Projections 5 as part of the 2010 Sydney Writers’ Festival. Presented by ICE, the show entertained audiences of all-ages and cultural backgrounds with a diverse cultural display of hip-hop rhymes and dance.
Local Indigenous hip-hop artist, Brothablack, hosted the event alongside our Urban Music Project Coordinator MC Trey. Fairfield video artist Vanna Seang, visual artist Krystal and the 9Lives parkour crew wowed the crowd with their performances.
Campbelltown crew Reef Thunder opened the event with a drumming sequence of Pacific beats. This was followed by a lyrical mix from hip-hop greats Def Wish Cast, Torcha and B-Don, Ozibatla, Urban Prophetz, True Vibenation, 9Lives and First Flight Crew.
Participants from our Urban Music Project and Liverpool’s Street University also had the opportunity to shine amongst the established acts.
Also at the event a moving tribute was paid to former Hip-Hop Projections performer and our friend Khaldoon Khalili.
Feedback from the audience was very positive and it was great to see so many families enjoying the performances.
