Remembering Minto

Minto is a suburb in Sydney’s outer south-west – a community undergoing rapid change. A significant aspect of this change is the redevelopment of the public housing estate. Since 2003 and in coming years, whole precincts in this former housing estate will be dismantled. Some residents have already been relocated. Streetscapes will be transformed and the community with it.
From 2005, ICE worked with residents and agencies through the Remembering Minto Group to collect and publish the stories and memories of this suburb before they are lost in urban transformation.

The Remembering Minto project officially commenced in June 2005 with Lift Off!, a morning held at local cafe KoKo’s Place. Members of the Minto community participated in the planning session and much was shared as residents laughed and cried while Remembering Minto.
In May 2006, a Community Storytelling Festival involved hundreds of children and young people from local schools in the area, incorporating performances in song and dance, storytelling, art and multimedia workshops.

Stories about Minto continued to be gathered until early 2007. In May, the Remembering Minto book and website were launched at the Minto Community Library.
The stories reproduced in the book and on the website reflect the diversity, humour and resilience, as well as the adversities and challenges of the Minto community.
