Training & Workshops

Switch Digital Arts Center works at the intersection between arts and technology, with experienced trainers and facilitators providing skill development for emerging artists, youth and migrants in a variety of workshops.

Switch began in 2004 by providing access to digital technology in order to promote creative collaborations with communities in Western Sydney.

Powered by ICE, Switch Digital Arts Centre is able to provide subsided rates for training, venue and equipment hire. Switch runs fee-paying courses by demand, facilitates customised training and workshops for specific organisations and projects.

Some areas we work in regularly:

  • Digital storytelling
  • Short Film production
  • Feature Film production
  • Music production

Examples of training

Digital Bites

Contracted by the Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association (MDAA), the Digital Bites program was administered by ICE to build digital media skills for young people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds to express their experience of having a sibling with a disability.

Over a period of three years, resources and tools were developed for participants to share and obtain further health and other information. A wide variety of learning skills are catered for, with excursions to the Botanic Garden for photography location classes. Experienced trainer Eddie Abd worked with the participants during their school holidays to develop digital skills in:

  • Photography
  • Digital storymaking
  • Animation
  • Stop motion film making
  • Blogging
  • Digitising artwork

This project is supported by the CALD Sibling Support Network, funded by the NSW Government Department of Human Services; Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC).

Twin Worlds

Contracted by Boronia Multicultural Services, ICE provided a one week digital storytelling workshop for Tamil youth aged 6 – 18 at the Switch Digital Media Arts Centre.

The Twin Worlds Project is a community arts project to promote inter-generational harmony within Sri Lankan Tamil refugees and Tamil migrants in the Western Sydney region. It is a collaboration between the Boronia Multi Cultural Services and artist Jiva Parthipan.

The training was faciliated by Merlyn Bilas of Camera Wallih Pictures.

In the words of the Twin Worlds participants, the week was ‘epic’.

Over the course of 5 days, 14 students aged from 5 – 18 years of age worked together to create short films about objects in their life that mean a lot to them.

The weeks learnings included:

  • photography
  • storyboarding
  • narrative development
  • scripting
  • voice production
  • editing in imovie

Over the week we learnt about the aspirations of the participants, who predominately had Tamil heritage. The class included a basketballer, a digital musician, a painter, a writer, an astronomer, a historian and a whole bunch of creativity.

The results can be seen here, as youth make films about symbols in their life that represent a topic of significance to them.
