Razzle Dazzle Orchestra is a Club Weld music making and performance project with the Art Gallery of NSW inspired by the ‘colour and music’ art of Roy de Maistre. The project commenced in 2017 with Club Weld musicians visiting the Gallery to get to know de Maistre’s theories and artworks and attend specially curated private viewings of prints and drawings from the Gallery’s collection.
These visits were powerful: Jerrah Patston wrote two perfect pop songs, Paintings On the Wall and When the Art Explodes Again; Andrew Barrett and Clare Brown emerged as witty and emotional ‘curatorial’ thinkers and Paolo Donia, talented drawer and musician, began working on an animated video of de Maistre’s life.
The year culminated in a truely enjoyable Gallery performance. Jerrah Patston and Sam Worrad delighted visitors as they sang amongst the de Maistre paintings; Chris Stiles, Anthony Talarico, T.J. Stines, Pasko Schravemade and Jerry Kahale aka The Morning Session and trio, Paolo Donia, Jerry Kahale and Nicola Morton performed moving and stately improvisations within Mikala Dwyer’s installation dedicated to the memory of her parents.
With the second round of Gallery visits starting soon we anticipate more great music, some curatorial adventures and who knows what else.
