propelling ideas into queer screen stories
from marginalised identities
A new screen project in Western Sydney is unearthing bold new stories from queer Muslims and LGBT+ women of colour.
Sling Shot is a partnership between Information + Cultural Exchange, the Australian Writers’ Guild’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee and community organisations Sydney Queer Muslims and SheQu Group Inc.
Working with award-winning screenwriter and playwright Tommy Murphy (‘Holding The Man’, ‘Mark Colvin’s Kidney’), emerging screenwriters, LGBTQI+ people from Muslim and other culturally diverse communities, will explore story structure and distil narrative concepts as one-pagers, the springboard for further creative development.
“This initiative is a important way to encourage, empower and enable , aspiring queer ethnic creative writers, and to give opportunities for their voices to shine”
– Kamalika, founder of SheQu.
“These stories are a tribute to the resilience of queer Muslims”
– Nurul of Sydney Queer Muslims. If you would like more information about Sling Shot, you can get in contact with Barry Gamba at I.C.E. for more details
